Basset Hound (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium
Jakey was surrendered to another rescue in a South Texas border town after his owners decided to get a puppy and nine-year-old Jake was no longer wanted. The rescue then reached out to HHBR.
Jakey came to us with an multitude of health issues including ear infections, several broken teeth, he is heartworm positive and tested positive for Ehrlichiosis (a tick borne disease quite common in South Texas) and he was not neutered. We did an extensive dental on him because several of the teeth were broken off at the gum line and many others were either cracked or partially broken and were no doubt causing him pain. We also treated his ear infections and got him up to date on vaccines. We got him neutered and Jakey is now in the process of heartworm treatment. Because he had so many teeth extracted soft treats are best for him.
Jakey is definitely an alpha dog. He would do best as an only dog or a with a submissive female. He can be a resource guarder, so he is fed separately at his foster home. He is house trained with a doggie door. Jakey is good on a leash. He would be best with children 12 and older because he will grab food out of your hand. He plays to win when it comes to food. He tolerates cats but will chase them unless corrected.
Jakey does excellent in the car. He prefers riding the middle of the backend of his foster’s SUV so he can look out as many windows as possible. He generally sits up during the entire ride so as not to miss anything. He loves people but can be very stubborn. Belly rubs, getting brushed and burrowing under bed pillows and blankets to make a nest are some of his favorite things other than food. At least once a day, usually in the evening, he will run around doing Basset Hound zoomies and playing with toys for a few minutes.
Once we get all his health issues eliminated or under control, Jakey will make someone a great companion. He is quite the dapper older gentleman.
